Now that the new version of SharePoint Online is available
as a production platform I have noticed a few considerations for any
implementation.
The first thing is setting up your tenant can be time
consuming so allow plenty of time for the build and provisioning. Once built and you want new Site Collections
added then don’t expect these to be ready immediately. I noticed in one engagement that it took four
hours to build my Site Collection so once you have planned your basic
architecture then provision the site collections. This also goes the same when
changing the quota sizes on a Site Collection so be aware of this in the build
phase.
If you are using basic Office365 authentication with the
online accounts then remember that SharePoint relies on the Exchange accounts
set up. So create an account with
nothing or incorrect text in the display name for Exchange and this will filter
through to all of your sites collections.
With your architecture think carefully about navigation
options. I will be writing a separate blog
on Wave 15 SharePoint online navigation but your master page choice or build
can have an influence on your site navigation.
There are many other lessons learnt with an Office365
SharePoint Online project which I plan to blog over the coming months.
